Fix an Unstable Wi-Fi Connection:

Are you experiencing Wi-Fi instability> If yes, then it may be happening because of wireless congestion. This problem is very common in neighborhoods that are densely packed. Connectivity suffers when a lot of people use the Wi-Fi network. If you wish to know how to fix Wi-Fi that is unstable or stuck, then take a good look below.

Unstable Wi-Fi is Caused Because of Wireless Interference

Wireless congestion can occur because of frequency overlap or because of a limited number of Wi-Fi channels.

1) Wireless Overlap

When you play an old car radio, changing the station sometimes lead to the overlapping of two different frequencies. This happens because two towers can operate on the same frequency channel. The same theory applies to Wi-Fi routers as well. When two or more routers transmit on the same channel they reduce internet speed and cause unstable connections.

This problem increases if you live in places that are densely populated. In an apartment complex, many routers can transmit on the same channel. The modern wireless technology that breaks every band into channels isn't able to cope with the level of interference.

2) Wi-Fi channels

Like radio, Wi-Fi breaks up into different frequencies in GHz spectrum of 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz. In case you have a Wi-Fi 6E, then you will receive access to the 6 GHz band. Every frequency breaks up in small increments known as channels.

You will see the worst congestion on the 2.4 GHz frequency because of its long-range and limited channels. It has a total of 11 channels and only 3 out of these 11 channels are overlapping. Hence, the speed and connection quality may suffer if there are a lot of routers in the same area.

If we talk about 5GHz channel, then it provides 23 non-overlapping channels. This is very much like AM and FM radio. However, AM has poor audio fidelity and FM does not have enough range.

The good thing is that you can change the channel of your router the way you change the radio dial. Firstly, you need to identify the channels that are not congested and take your device to it. In case that doesn't work, then upgrade your router to a 6 GHz or 5 GHz model.

How can I Fix an Unstable WiFi Connection?

Below are the steps that you need to apply to fix an unstable Wi-Fi connection.

1) Download and install the Wi-Fi analysis app

On Windows, a lot of free apps are capable of analyzing the quality of wireless channels. One of the best options that you can use is the Wi-Fi analyzer. In case you have Windows but you are not able to access the Microsoft Store, then you must use NirSoft's Wi-FiInfoVew. In case you don't have Windows, then search for Wi-Fi analyzer on your operating system's app store. There, you are going to see various options.

2) Search for unstable Wi-Fi

It is very easy and simple to use a Wi-Fi analyzer. Just install the app and then run it. Once you are done with the installation, open it by going to Windows search and then select the Wi-Fi analyzer.

This tool will help you know the Wi-Fi signal strength. It can detect the signal strength ranging from 0-100 decibel milliwatts. In case you have a 5 Ghz network, then you will see a toggle at the end of the app, which will enable you to switch between detecting 2.4GHz and 5 GHz. To analyze the signal quality of your wireless router.

To analyze the signal quality of your router, below are the steps that you are required to take. First of all, choose Analyze given in the top menu bar.

Then, you will see a visualization of wireless networks in your area. If you see two networks broadcasting on the same channel, then it can lead to overlap. You can see a number between 1 and 161 on every channel on 5GHZ frequency. Plus, you will see numbers from 1-11 on 2.4 GHz frequency.

3) How to change the channel of your router?

In order to access the settings of your router, you need an internet browser such as Microsoft Edge or Chrome. The process to access the settings may differ from model to model. However, some general rules are applicable.

If you are using a Netgear router, then you need to go to routerlogin.net. In case you are using TP-link routers, then go to TP-Link login.net. If you are using a Linksys router, then you need to enter 192.168.1.1 in your web browser.

Once you open the login panel, you need to enter your username and password. Enter admin in the username section and password in the password section. You can see the login details at the back of your router. You can also find them in the instruction manual that cam with your router. If you aren't able to access your router, then search the internet to find your router's access method.
