This guide illustrates the procedure to troubleshoot Spectrum WiFi router using few simple steps.
Sometimes, slow speed is an issue with your wired or wireless connection. So, quickly run a wired speed test for your router connection.
Note: Connect your computer to your modem using an Ethernet cord and then run a wired speed test. If the wired speed test results are 70% of what you expected, then you must first troubleshoot Spectrum WiFi router for wired connection. If the test results come good then the issue is likely with your wireless connection.
Ensure that the Ethernet cables are plugged in correctly.
The router LED is on if the Ethernet cable connecting the router and the modem is plugged in securely. Also, ensure that the modem and router are turned on. If your computer is connected to the router via Ethernet cable, LAN LED should be on. Your router has a network name (SSID) and password (network key) at the backside of the device.
The listed factors might influence your WiFi speeds:
1. Competing Devices: The more devices you connect to share your Internet connection, the more bandwidth each will use. So, disconnect some of the devices that aren't beneficial to improve performance on other devices and then troubleshoot Spectrum WiFi router.
2. Competing Networks: Through your computer, you can check for the other wireless networks in the area that might be competing for bandwidth.
3. Router Distance: Note that your best signal ranges 125 feet within the line of sight. Therefore, try to move your device closer to see if your speeds improve.
4. Signal Obstacles: Ideally, your router must be placed in the most central spot in your home and nothing should interrupt the signal in between the way.
5. Time of Day: Certain times, you are experiencing slow speeds during peak hours 5 to 9 PM. So, check your speed during a non-peak hour to see if the signal improves.
6. Other Sources of Interference: Try to place or move your WiFi devices away from other transmitting devices, like baby monitors, cell phones, and Bluetooth devices. You can simply turn them off when not in use.
Ensure that your wireless device should be compatible with the network that you have selected (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). This step is important to troubleshoot Spectrum WiFi router.
By default, In-Home WiFi is set to WPA2 encryption standard. While few older wireless devices like USB wireless adapters and wireless adapter cards might not support WPA2 encryption. In case the wireless device is not supporting WPA2, then it won't join your wireless network.
If you are having an older wireless device that does not support WPA2, then change the Security Option from WPA2-PSK [AES] to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
In some cases, all of your devices are experiencing a slow speed problem. Therefore, you need to check your network’s security settings. You can even consider using a Security Suite for managing your security settings.
