Question

How to Change WEP Key on Linksys Router

I have a new Linksys router WRT54gs and a new Dell laptop. The router works well with the cable attached but when I go to wireless I get a strong signal but unable to get on the internet with WEP security. With security disabled the wireless works fine. But will not connect to the internet with WEP security on. I tried to use the CD install disk that comes with the router but it does not help.

Change WEP Key on Linksys Router:

To secure your wireless network from intruders & unwanted connections, wireless password is necessary. By using a strong password, you can also limit the number of connections. But it is also important to update the password from time-to-time.

For changing Linksys WEP key, follow these steps:-

Step 1: Access the Linksys router’s web-based setup page. Open any web browser and enter “192.168.1.1” on the Address bar then hit Enter key.

Step 2: Now, you will be asked to enter log-in details in the username and password field boxes. Leave the username field box empty and type "admin” for Password. But if you have set up a Username and Password for your Linksys router before then you have to enter your those personalized credentials instead of default ones.

Step 3: After that, navigate to Wireless tab and then click on Wireless Security sub-tab.

Step 4:- For WPA/WPA2 Security Mode - Go to the Passphrase field to view the Linksys WEP key. Next, type your new wireless password in that specific field.

For WEP security mode – Normally, WEP key is located under the Key 1 field. To change this, go to Encryption and select 40/64-bit (10 hex digits). Now type any value on the Passphrase field and click the Generate button. By doing this, the password will automatically generate. Now new Linksys WEP key will appear in Key 1 field box.

If due to any reason you have to erase Linksys WEP key then modify Security Mode into Disabled.

Step 5:- In last, click on Save settings to save your changes. Now Linksys router’s WEP key will change.
