Port Forwarding on Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Router

Did you know that your Netgear router has a firewall, which keeps your network safe from unauthorized access? All the connections, which you need for playing games and using apps will get blocked.

The procedure of opening these blocked ports is called port forwarding. This involves forwarding a port from the internet to any device on your home network be it a smartphone or PC.

Below is the step-by-step process that you need to follow for port forwarding on your Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router.

Step 1: It is necessary for you to set up a static IP address in the device to which you wish to forward the port. By doing so, the ports will remain open even when the device restarts. Once you are done setting up a static IP address, then you must log in to your router.

Step 2: After that, you need to log into your Netgear router. If you wish to access your Netgear router's settings, then you need to open the web interface on your internet browser. You can use any browser you want, the type of browser does not matter. You can choose any browser like Firefox, Edge, Chrome, or internet explorer.

Once you are done opening the internet browser of your choice, then go to its URL section and enter the IP address of your router. After that, a dialog box will appear before you where you will be required to enter the username and password. The default username for your Netgear Nighthawk router is admin and the default password is password. Select ok after entering the username and password.

Step 3: Now, you need to move to the port forwarding section. For that, you need to select the Advanced link given at the top.

Then, look at the sidebar given at the left. Now, select the option of Advanced Setup. After that, a new menu will be displayed before you.

Select the option of Port Triggering or Port forwarding. Now, put a dot right next to the radio button given below the heading of "Port Forwarding" in the upper section of the page. Then, select the button "Add custom service" given at the end of the page.

Step 4: Now, go to the Service Name box and then give a name to this entry. The name is not going to affect the functioning of port forwarding. This is just to remind you why you set up a port forward. Now, choose the protocol type of ports that you are going to forward. In case you are forwarding just one port number, then type that number in the box of "External Starting Port".

In case you are forwarding it to a range of ports, then put the lowest number in the "External Starting Port". Then, enter the highest value in the box of "External Ending Port". Please ensure that the box "Use the same port range for internal port" is checked.

Now, enter the IP address of the device you wish to forward the ports to. This can be the IP address of your PC or some other device on your network. After that, select the "Apply" button.
