Universal plug-and-play helps devices like computer systems and internet appliances for accessing the network and connecting other devices required. UPnP can discover and receive services from the registered devices n your network.
If you use peer-to-peer connections or real-time communications and apps like multiplayer gaming, then it is important for you to enable UPnP. A malware program or virus can make use of UPnP and interfere with the security of your LAN.
In such a case, you need to set up port forwarding manually. However, there are cases where you are required to set port forwarding manually. Here, you will learn how to enable Universal Plug and Play on Netgear router
Below are the steps that you need to carry out in order to disable or enable Universal Plug and Play.
Step 1: Open your internet browser on your smartphone or computer system, which is connected to the network of your router.
Step 2: Enter www.routerlogin.net in the location bar of your browser and then a window will open up.
Step 3: Enter the username and password of your router. Type admin in the username section and password in the password section.
Keep in mind that both the username as well as the password are case-sensitive. Now, the basic home page will appear on the screen.
Step 4: Click on the option of Advanced and then select the option of Advanced setup. Now finally, select UPnP. The UPnP page will open up.
Step 5: Now, select the check box of Turn On UPnP. This option is usually selected by default. You can disable or enable UPnP for the automatic configuration of the device.
In case the check box gets cleared, then the router will not enable the device to control resources of the router automatically like port forwarding. If you select the option of Turn On UPnP, then below are the steps that you need to follow.
Write Advertisement Period within a Duration of 30 Minutes.
This advertisement period states frequency is which the UPnP information is broadcasted by the router. The value lies within a range of 1 minute to 1440 minutes. Although the set default time is 30 minutes.
With a small duration, control points get the status of the present device with more traffic. It can negatively impact the freshness of the device's status.
Live for Advertisement is Measured in Hops.
Change the advertisement time to live in hops for every packet of UPnP you send. Hops are steps taken by packets between routers. The hops range between 1 to 255. Its default value is 4 hops, which is ok for almost every home network. In case you find that some devices are not reached correctly or being updated, then you must increase the value of hops.
Step 6: Select the button of Apply.
The table of UPnP portmap shows the IP address of every UPnP device that is accessing the router and the ports that the device has opened. It also shows the type of ports, which are open.
It also tells you whether the opened ports are active for every IP address or not. Click on the refresh icon to refresh the information displayed in the UPnP table.
